Shuuen no Shiori 4: Special Story
Special Story - You, Reflected in the Setting Sun...
Tomorrow is the first day of the cultural festival. Since the club I’m a member of, the Film Club, has nearly finished preparing for our movie screening, we split up to help our own classes prepare for their presentations.
My class is going to be performing a play in the classroom. Now, it was a matter of decorating the room with small props and making the last things we needed to do so.
“...Wow, this is incredible! Did you make this yourself, B-ka-kun?”
“...Huh? Ah, yeah.”
Upon seeing the decorations I had made out of leftover cloth, one of my classmates had loudly praised me. I’ve always been good with my hands, and I loved making these kinds of things.
So after that, until it was time to go home, I happily accepted the requests from my classmates to make all sorts of things. I hadn’t helped them out until now because I had been busy working on the film, so I was glad to have been even a little helpful... That’s what I was thinking as I got ready to head home. However, it was then that I realized that I had forgotten something in the Film Club’s clubroom.
“Ah, I forgot something there... I need to go get it...”
Starting tomorrow, in the music room on the second floor of the old wooden school building, the Film Club’s clubroom, we’d be hosting a movie screening. Since we finished setting everything up, there’s probably no one there, I thought as I drew closer to the music room, but there was some kind of noise coming from inside. I nervously peeked into the room, and there was our director and producer, E-ki-kun.
“...I wonder what he’s doing...?”
I silently watched for a bit to see what was going on, but it was clear that he was just making small adjustments to the room. He was adjusting things regarding if the people coming tomorrow could shift the conducting wire, or how they could make the viewing unstressful, and while murmuring to himself about some kind of detail, he sometimes measured how long the distance was between things and shifted the desks and chairs.
“...The piano reflects the picture frame too much from here... would it be best to remove it?”
Muttering to himself from atop a desk he had climbed onto, he took a picture frame off the wall. Upon seeing that, I couldn’t help the words that burst from my mouth.
“...Ah, c-can I help!?”
“Whoa!? B-ka, what’s up?”
“...I forgot something here...”
“Oh, got it! Ah, then this... wait, looks like there’s a hole in the wall... can we stick paper to it...? B-ka, could you grab the masking tape and paper from over there?”
“Ah, o-okay!”
And so, the two of us worked on the final details for our screening until we had to leave. Even though he can seem careless, I think E-ki-kun, who is reliable, thorough, and works hard even on the small details... is wonderful. That’s what I was thinking then.
ーThe setting sun illuminated the classroom. Your smile and voice, coupled with the light, were seared into my memory.
So beautiful that it was painful; an image that evoked memories of summer.
